International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC)

International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC)

Climate change challenges industries through various risks such as physical risks (extreme weather damaging infrastructure, disrupting supply chains, affecting resources like water/crops) and transition risks (new regulations, carbon pricing, shifting consumer demands, and technological shifts to decarbonize, impacting high-emission sectors like cement, steel, and energy). These factors increase operational costs, create financial losses, disrupt logistics, threaten employee health, and force industries towards cost innovation in low-carbon technologies and use of renewal resources, bioenergy and circular economy.

To reduce the carbon footprint and limit environmental impact, countries are shifting towards use of sustainable energy sources, such as renewable energy, biofuels and biomass to move towards low carbon economy. To address this new market, the EU has created mandatory parameters for all EU member countries for the sustainable production and processing of biomass in the Renewable Energy Directive (DIRECTIVE (EU) 2023/2413 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of 18 October 2023)

The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) is a voluntary standard covering the sustainable and responsible production of biomass from agriculture, forestry and aquaculture, biofuels, recycled carbon-based materials and other renewable raw materials.

The ISCC is an independent multi-stakeholder initiative and leading certification system supporting sustainable, fully traceable, deforestation-free and climate-friendly supply chains. The scheme is aligned with the UN Global Compact and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The ISCC organization’s mission is based on the conviction that companies can accelerate the transition to a circular economy through the utilization of recycled materials or materials derived from biological waste. This helps to protect forests, carbon-rich soils and biodiversity, and contributes to waste reuse.

Corporate Governance Advisory Services provides training and other support for the certification of ISCC plus.
